CIVIL JUSTICE REFORM
The Illinois Business Roundtable has been one of the leaders in
the fight for civil justice reform in Illinois. In early 1993,
the Roundtable created the Illinois Civil Justice League, which has
since grown to become one of the largest and most effective civil
justice reform coalitions in the nation. The Roundtable
continues to support the ICJL and plays an active role on the ICJL's
Board of Directors and Executive Committee. The ICJL in turn
works closely with and provides staff and professional support for
the Roundtable's Civil Justice Reform Task Force.
The civil justice reform effort has expanded in recent years with
the realization that significant reform is not possible without
corresponding reform of the Illinois judiciary. Thus the ICJL
and the IBRT are heavily focused not only on the legislative reforms
that can fix a broken legal system, but also on the changes in the
judiciary -- and some judges -- that are necessary to properly
enforce and interpret the law.
